Selfcare and being Self-employed. Balance is Key!

Being Self-Employed Doesn't Mean You Should Avoid Caring for
Yourself

By Amy Collett of bizwell.org

When you are self-employed, it is easy to get wrapped up in your work and forget about taking care of yourself. As a result, you might feel exhausted or overwhelmed.

Additionally, without self-care, you are more susceptible to illness because your mind and body are exhausted. It's essential to be mindful of what you need to maintain your best health throughout the day. Shop Buddy Ball Band to enhance your home workouts!

Take a Break During Your Workday

When you are self-employed, you may feel like taking a break is cheating or lazy; however, it is easy to become drained and even sick when you stay in your workspace all day. Take a break every once in a while to improve your productivity. It does not have to be long, but move around and stretch your legs or do something different for about 15 minutes each day.

Get Screened

It may be easy to forego preventative health care, such as screenings or checkups, when you work for yourself; however, getting an annual physical allows your doctor to discover health issues before they become problematic.

Early detection can lead to treatment that is more effective, so you will feel better sooner rather than later.

Sleep Well at Night

If you don't sleep well at night, you won't be as productive the following day.

This drowsiness can lead to poor business decisions and incomplete tasks. Plus, if you do not sleep well at night, you are more likely to catch a cold because your immune system is not working at its full capacity. To get a good night's sleep, turn off all electronic devices an hour before bedtime and limit caffeine consumption throughout the day.

Eat Well
When you are on your own schedule, it can be tempting to grab fast food and takeout to get more work done while eating; however, this is not the best way to maintain your health, because certain foods affect your energy levels and mood.

To stay healthy, eat a high protein breakfast each morning. For lunch and dinner, try to incorporate vegetables, lean meats, and complex carbs.

Additionally, limit your intake of alcohol.

Stay Fit
A regular fitness routine will work wonders for your physical and mental health.

Taking time out daily for physical activity will reward you with increased energy and mental acuity. For a quick and easy fitness solution, check out Buddy Ball Band.

Schedule Time Off
Setting aside time for fun gives your mind and body time to recuperate. Schedule time off on the weekends, and remember to disconnect from your work while you are away.
Additionally, do not skip a yearly or twice-annual vacation. Make sure you are traveling a few hours away, at least. Separate yourself from your business to get a real break from work, including avoiding emails, meetings, and anything else related to your company.

Consider an LLC
Your business type can be a source of stress. A sole proprietorship places all the liability on the individual, while a partnership makes you and your business partners liable for any legal problems you encounter. Structuring your company as an LLC limits your liability and provides other benefits that can reduce stress.

Additionally, it is less expensive to operate than a corporation. Check out the cost to start an LLC in California here.

A Successful Business Includes Self-Care
When you are self-employed, it's normal to put your work first because you take pride in what you do. But if you don't take time for yourself, you will burn out quickly.
